In my work I like to choose common materials that children use. I like the idea of taking something people give to children and using it to create something unexpected. For this piece I took the stencils kids get for gifts at school or birthday parties and chose to use them not as intended. I used parts of each stencil and combined them with others to create unique symmetrical shapes. When I looked at them they felt familiar. As a child I would stare at the wallpaper in my house, and I would notice that the patterns on the paper formed abstract faces and shapes that changed based on if you looked at them. I would sit in quiet contemplation for long periods of time waiting for new patterns to emerge. This piece is inspired and guided by that imaginative space I would go to as a child. I combined the awe of looking up at the stars with this quiet contemplative shape exploration in this piece. I wanted to child to be at the center and all this beauty swirling around him.
